The Special Constabulary is a form of serving your community like no other. By volunteering as a Special Constable, you will support the work of your police force in your local community.

The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work with and support their local police. The importance of the Special Constabulary cannot be under estimated and the need is as great today as it ever has been.

Becoming a Special can help develop self-respect and self-confidence; improve your communication skills; and learn more about your community.

Joining the Specials opens up a world of opportunity for personal and professional advancement. Undergoing the training and then going out on patrol makes a welcome break from day-to-day life, bringing excitement and challenges to every day you volunteer.

On completion of training, Special Constables carry a full range of police powers, are issued with the same protective equipment, wear a similar uniform, and deal with the same type of incidents as your regular colleagues. These may range from youth disorder and Special events through to theft from shops and burglaries.

Special Constables have a unique contribution to make in all areas of policing. Working in neighbourhoods, 24/7 operational policing and more specialist roles, You will be a visible presence on our streets, working alongside regular police officers to tackle issues and respond to incidents. Special Constables provide an extensive pool of skills, talents, experience and knowledge and provide a key link within the communities in which you work and serve.

Special Constables must be able to talk to people effectively. As a Special Constable you will be solving problems and making sound decisions every day.

We are looking for much the same personal qualities in Specials that we look for in regular Police Officers - integrity, honesty, tact and communication skills. We are looking for individuals who thrive on variety, extensive public contact and a high level of personal responsibility.

If you haven't already, you might find it useful to explore the Special Constable page of our careers website, here.

The first stage of the application process is to come along to one of our initial online engagement events. Please click the apply icon below to register your interest and we will be in touch with further details.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Special Constable with us, we look forward to welcoming you to one of our engagement events.
