The Role:
Salary Banding: £19,374 - £26,016 plus allowances. 
Grade C to Grade E
Career graded progression between grade pay points for post holders will be managed through the career-grade framework for Crime Scene Investigators.

 

 
Forensic Services within Northumbria Police is transforming, the department provides essential forensic support to all investigations and relies on skill and teamwork of all of our professional practitioners.   

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Crime Scene Investigation Unit as a Crime Scene Investigator. The role is to provide forensic advice and examine scenes of crime, prioritising where necessary, in order to maximise the identity and recovery of forensic evidence and intelligence; to provide effective and high quality support to the investigation of crime and further the key objectives of the Force. The role will be predominantly working shifts between 7am and midnight, covering 7 days a week, including some on call cover.

Person Specification

 

 
Suitable candidates will need to be able to demonstrate a passion for forensics and determination to deliver a high performing service. Further essential and desirable criteria are as below;

Essential
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent academic qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. forensic science, crime scene science, policing/investigation) or completion of an accredited/ recognised vocational crime scene investigation training programme; or at least three years operational policing/criminal investigation experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of information gathering and problem solving.
  • An ability to develop and motivate themselves and others within a team in line with organisational behaviours, and values.
  • Able to utilise a range of methods to communicate and adapt to the needs of others both within the organisation and external customers.
  • Current Full UK Driving Licence 
Desirable
  • Previous successful completion of crime scene investigation Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 qualification or equivalent.
  • An understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
  • An understanding of the role of the Forensic Science Regulator and quality standards.
  • Demonstrable experience of using own initiative to highlight areas for improvement with a range of solutions.
Career Grade Progression
  • Progression from C grade to D grade will take place after successful completion of either an accredited Stage 1 Crime Scene Investigation course or successful completion of an in-house training programme, plus an evidence portfolio concluded with a departmental management competency assessment.  This development is likely to take between 12-24mths to complete depending on prior experience/training upon appointment.
  • Progression from D grade to E grade will take place after successful completion of an accredited CSI Stage 2 major crime course and successful completion of a further serious and complex crime evidence portfolio concluded with departmental management competency assessment.  This development is expected to take a further 12-24mths from successful volume crime competency.
Vetting level: 
Recruitment Vetting (RV) 
Applicants must be a resident of the UK for a minimum period of 5 years to ensure vetting checks can be successfully performed.  A job offer will be dependent upon vetting clearance, medical information and references.
