The Role:
Location: Based at Peterlee Warehouse, Durham Constabulary.

Forensic Services within Northumbria Police is transforming, the functions at Peterlee provide essential forensic support to all investigations and rely on the skills and teamwork of all of our experienced and professional practitioners.   They include fingerprints, footwear, forensic submissions and plan drawing and many of these units are accredited to ISO 17025 forensic standards as part of a successful strategic alliance with Durham Constabulary.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced forensic practitioner to join the Peterlee team as an essential part of the Forensic Services Management Team.  We are looking for an experienced manager with expert knowledge of forensic identification, to lead the functions at Peterlee and deliver an outstanding frontline service to our communities.  

This Identification Manager will lead and develop the operational teams whilst working closely with the Head of Forensic Services to ensure we maximise cost effective forensic opportunities in the investigation of crime, based on scientific and evidential benefits.

What will I be doing?
You will be responsible for the day to day management of the Fingerprint Bureau, Footwear Intelligence Unit, Fingerprint Enhancement Laboratory, Forensic Submissions and Plan Drawing and Mapping.  As part of this role you will manage and develop staff ensuring they have the knowledge to deliver best results through high performance.

You will be expected to co-ordinate and manage all accreditation needs, working together with the Quality Teams across both Northumbria Police and Durham Constabulary, to achieve and maintain the appropriate ISO 17025 and 17020 accreditation targets as set by the Forensic Science Regulator now and in the future.  

You will be required to attend local, regional and national meeting and conference on behalf of Northumbria Police. You will be fully supported in personal development in this role ensuring you maintain up to date expert and professional skills and knowledge of forensic disciplines, limitations and partnership capabilities, whilst being responsible for providing strategic performance data to support the delivery of Forensic Services across Northumbria Police. 

What do I need?
The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate a passion for forensics and determination to deliver a high performing service.  Previous experience of both operational and technical management of a forensic unit is essential and expert status in forensic identification, e.g. fingerprints or footwear would be an advantage.

Vetting level: Management Vetting (MV) 
Applicants must be a resident of the UK for a minimum period of 5 years to ensure vetting checks can be successfully performed.  A job offer will be dependent upon vetting clearance, medical information and references.
