Location: Primarily Ponteland with flexible working across the Force area, including Home Working

The role
The force’s Digital Policing (DP) infrastructure is the foundation that the rest of the Digital Policing services are built upon and significant investment has been made into these Infrastructure Services in recent years. We are looking to appoint a new Infrastructure Services Manager to manage the continued development and support of the force’s Network, Server, Storage and Security infrastructure using an appropriate combination of on-premise and cloud-based services.

The successful candidate will manage the appropriate support and enhancement of the current:-
  • WAN/LAN/WiFi services - to ensure that the Force has the required access to DP systems in a timely yet cost effective way, using a combination of internal DP resources and suppliers,
  • Server environment (both physical and virtual servers) - to ensure that the force continues to benefit from future technology enhancements in the efficient delivery of appropriately secure, reliable and available application services,
  • Centralised storage environments (SAN, secondary and backup) - to ensure that the force continues to benefit from future technology enhancements in the efficient delivery of appropriately secure, reliable and available data management services,
  • Security systems and environment - ensuring that the force is able to implement and maintain an appropriate set of security devices/policies/principals that will pass appropriate security testing as well as assessing, developing and managing the delivery of the business case for appropriate transition to cloud based services in the future.
In addition to the management of the technical services (equipment and staff) the Infrastructure Services Manager will work with the Digital Policing SMT  and Architectural teams to inform and liaise with key stakeholders ensuring that the cost and performance of the future provision of infrastructure services is understood and supported by both the Chief Officer Team and the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner.

What will I do?
  • Lead, manage and motivate the Infrastructure Services team to ensure the provision of effective Infrastructure support services.
  • Develop the Infrastructure Services Strategy.
  • Ensure the effective planning and implementation of a phased update and replacement of all infrastructure equipment.
  • Ensure the effective preparation, packaging, placement and monitoring of DP contracts.
  • Ensure the effective management, monitoring and maintenance of allocated section budgets.
  • Manage assigned projects.
  • Ensure the effective management of suppliers.
What do I need?
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Experience of managing a 2nd line technical support function.
  • Demonstrable experience of defining an Infrastructure strategy.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering the agree service strategy.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Network, Server and Storage service provision, ideally in a public sector environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and leading the performance of large IT suppliers.
  • A proven track record in service development and achieving improvements in standards and performance while reducing costs.
  • Demonstrable experience of running a programme of ICT change projects delivering new functionality.
  • Evidence of strategic awareness, creativity and innovation.
  • Extensive experience of leading and developing multi­disciplinary technical teams. 
  • A deep understanding of the IT industry and the implications of emerging technologies for the wider business environment and keeps themselves up to date on current developments.
