Role:
Northumbria Police and the Office of the Police and Crime

secured funding from the Home Office to work with children affected by domestic
abuse. This project is Operation
Encompass: The Next Step, which builds on the extremely successful and valuable
Operation Encompass work already in place across the whole Northumbria Police
area, supporting those children with the school environment, who are experiencing domestic
abuse in the home.
Operation Encompass: The Next Step entails seeking out early
intervention with children living with domestic abuse and giving them the best
possible chance to cope and recover from experiencing this harmful and damaging
behaviour. The project aims to provide a
Whole System Approach to tackling domestic abuse, supporting vulnerable

each school for any pupil, relative/carer or school employee seeking advice and
support in relation to domestic abuse.
The
expected outcomes as a result of these interventions are;
-
Increased awareness of domestic abuse and its
complexity, including the impact on children and what constitutes healthy relationships
-
An upskilled workforce of staff in schools in
dealing with disclosures and spotting signs of domestic abuse in children
-
Increased reporting of domestic abuse with appropriate mechanisms to
facilitate this
-
Better support and protection for victims
-
A more coordinated approach to domestic abuse
