The role:

A rare opportunity has arisen to undertake the position of Technical Surveillance Unit, Technical Officer working with a team of specialist staff operating within the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) You will be joining Northumbria Police and work within the Regional Technical Surveillance Unit based in the Cleveland area, covering operational activity within the region and wider UK as required.

Applications are invited from candidates who can demonstrate enthusiasm, resilience, flexibility and technical expertise to work in a team of specialists to provide support and technical assistance with covert surveillance operations working with the Regions police forces and other regional and national Law Enforcement in the pursuit and prevention of Serious and Organised Crime.

What will I be doing?

Support and administration of the NERSOU TSU network and server environment including AD Server environment

Installation of Network infrastructure including fixed wireless equipment and Cisco/Juniper hardware

Design and develop bespoke network solutions

Routine monitoring and maintenance of NERSOU TSU infrastructure

Assisting with Project work and building systems, to support NERSOU

Work co-operatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team and departmental goals. Ensure your behaviour complies with Police Service values and organise your own work effectively to meet the demands of the role

Work in accordance with the aims and objectives set by the organisation in accordance with the National Decision Making model and THRIVE

Undertake research and project work, regarding emerging technical advances, capabilities and new equipment to provide technical solutions

Maintain professional licence status and develop technical knowledge by undertaking continuous professional development through liaison with external agencies/partners, attending meetings, courses and completing qualifications as required.

Respond to incidents and customer assistance requests in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrate the capability to apply technical knowledge to resolving issues around complex network solutions.

What do I need?

Previous technical experience in a relevant discipline is highly desirable. Any experience of working in a Network and Data Centre environment is also sought after.

Scripting skills and knowledge of Linux/Unix environments along with a broad understanding of Cyber security principles and Cloud technologies is also desirable.

The main duties of the Technical Officer will be to maintain and support the Surveillance infrastructure and applicants must be able to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and decision making.

Candidates must be highly motivated, mature and disciplined, work well as part of a team and have the ability to make sound decisions and remain calm under pressure.

The nature of TSU work is such that applicants must be able to demonstrate an extremely flexible approach towards their role and work in a time critical environment.

This role would suit a candidate with a background in Network and Data Centre infrastructure, AV Systems, Cyber technology principles together with established competency in MS Suite, databases and record keeping management software.

Eligible candidates will already hold HND / City & Guilds (QCF Level 5 or above) in Engineering Technical Support / AV technologies or closely related technical disciplines.

Project Management, Health and Safety (IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent) or formal training experience are desirable.

Physically fit and would be required to work outside, work at heights including working on fixed mast infrastructures, in confined spaces or working under pressure.

In addition, you must hold a current and full UK/European driving licence. Occasionally you may be asked to work unsociable hours, sometimes at short notice across the United Kingdom.

Vetting level: 
Management Vetting (MV) and Security Clearance (SC)
Applicants must be a resident of the UK for a minimum period of 5 years to ensure vetting checks can be successfully performed.  A job offer will be dependent upon vetting clearance, medical information and references.
