The role:

Base Location as required within the Force area including Home Working

This is an exciting opportunity within the ICT department to contribute to the Force’s strategic technical needs during a critical period of change.

ICT requires a Development Support & Maintenance Manager to lead a small team of highly skilled developers upgrading, supporting and maintaining a combination of COBOL and Java developed systems.

This role will deliver process and procedure to ensure a consistently high quality level of service is provided to support and maintain in-house developed systems once they have been delivered into the operational environment.

The successful candidate will also ensure that the performance of the systems and support services remain in line with service level agreements and comply to ICT Service Management guidelines in order to provide a customer focused service.

The systems that the development team support are critical to the Policing service and when they don’t perform as expected, this can be incredibly stressful for the end user.  This role is looking for someone who understands the impact of a system failure to the business and can not only guide the solution delivery but also support the user through the experience.

Team management equally plays a critical part of this role so motivational team leadership skills and line management experience are essential.

In return for your dedication and experience, we offer 23 days’ leave, excluding bank holidays, increasing to 28 days for 5 years+ service.  We support our people inside and out of work – offering a very competitive pension scheme, childcare vouchers, and discounts on shopping and eating out thanks to the Blue Light Card. And to take care of your physical and mental well-being, we’ve invested in trained mental health first aiders on-site, an employee advice service and access to gyms in some stations.  We also offer flexible working both from an agile approach to work location through to flexing how you want to work your contracted hours to accommodate both successful service delivery and a healthy, balanced home life.

What will I be doing?

You will be ensuring that all in-house built applications are performant with any issues, problems or service errors addressed in a timely and consistent manner whilst supporting the end user through the process.

You will also prioritise the service requests that come into the team to ensure that support and change is delivered in an appropriate order of criticality.

You will support your team through a significant period of change and transformation within the organisation to ensure they remain motivated, nurtured and appropriately skilled in line with an ever evolving portfolio of technology.

What do I need?

• Experience in capacity planning and resource management;

• Good strategic insight and a logical approach to planning, prioritisation and overseeing the delivery of tactical software development, support and maintenance;

• Excellent communication and team working skills;

• Strong technical experience to guide and validate development approach, however, coding experience is not essential;

• Experience in Agile delivery methods;

• A degree, HND or equivalent qualification, and/or have significant relevant experience.
