The role
Here at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Professional Standards Department as a Vetting Supervisor.
Join our team to support the Vetting Manager in planning and delivering the vetting function. Ensure a high standard of service that meets organisational needs, reduces risk, and enhances public confidence in policing.
Provide daily supervision and support to the vetting team, assisting with workload prioritisation, staff development, and offering procedural and tactical guidance.
What you’ll do
- Act as an escalated point of contact for vetting matters, to provide advice and guidance and to support supervisors and managers across the Force.
- Prepare vetting reports to the highest standards, issuing vetting clearance or providing rationale for vetting decline, escalating only the most complex cases directly to the Vetting Manager with a reasoned recommendation.
- Interrogate local and national systems to carry out the full range of checks specified in the line the College of Policing Code of Vetting Practice and Authorised Professional Practice, to ensure that all relevant information is obtained.
- Carry out risk assessments of information gathered and ensure the production of an auditable rationale for vetting decisions, identifying potential vulnerabilities and any matters relating to an applicant’s suitability for vetting clearance which may be a threat to security. Conduct further research and investigation into identified vulnerabilities, outlining any risk mitigation required.
- Coordinate and support the tasking of the Vetting Analysts, allocating and prioritising work to ensure that the team can effectively manage Force vetting demand to provide an effective service which meets and responds to business need.
- Supervise staff in their day-to-day duties including allocation of work, individual performance management and development, appraisal, attendance management and assist with recruitment, discipline, welfare and development of staff to provide a quality vetting function.
- Provide resilience for the Vetting Manager role in their absence, maintaining competency to undertake decision making for complex or contentious vetting cases.
- Quality assure vetting checks to ensure compliance and consistency across the Vetting Team and support effective decision making.
- Work with People Department to provide independent oversight into cases of potential disproportionality, implementing changes to practices where appropriate.

What you’ll bring
Essential:
- Good general level of education to GCSE standard (or equivalent).
- An ability to interpret and apply guidance to a specific activity.
- An ability to identify and evaluate risks, and to take appropriate, proportionate action.
- Demonstrable ability to manage time to plan; to allocate work appropriately within the team and to identify and mitigate risks to delivery.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to listen to others.
Desirable:
- Experience of working with confidential and / or sensitive information.
- Thorough knowledge and practical understanding of the College of Policing Vetting Code of Practice and associated College of Policing Guidance, and local force vetting policy.
- Trained in interviewing.
- Skilled in using force computer-based databases and physical filing systems.
- An ability to develop effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders Experience of working as part of a team
- Demonstrable ability to manage the introduction of new business processes or ways of working at team level.

Terms of appointment
This is a permanent role subject to a six-month probationary period.
