Footwear Technician - JRN 10378

Location: Peterlee

Salary Range: £22,107 to £24,156

The role

Ever wondered what it would be like to work for one of the biggest Police Forces in the UK? Exciting, challenging, thought-provoking and rewarding are just some of the ways we would describe it. And that’s not just the Police Officers. Here at Northumbria Police, we’ve got almost 2000 police staff working behind the scenes to make our community a safe place to live, work and visit. Fancy joining us on a journey to prevent crime and protect our communities? That journey starts here…

Our Forensics team offer advice and guidance on all forensics issues, supporting investigations and ensuring analysis is up to date and robust. The intelligence provided significantly drives our vision to deliver an outstanding police service. Within the team, we have an opportunity to join our Footwear Unit as a Footwear Technician.

The purpose of this role is to provide a footwear mark screening service to the force. As part of this role you will provide advice on the evidential value of footwear marks to ensure the cost effective submission to an external forensic service provider of marks capable of materially furthering the progress of an investigation or prosecution.

The successful candidate will be expected to receive and examine footwear impressions and footwear marks retrieved from crime scenes in order to identify their source and evidential value, prior to submission for forensic examination, in order to contribute to the timely and effective investigation of crime.

In addition to evaluating marks for evidential value prior to submission, you will be expected to collate and examine information obtained from crime scene footwear marks and custody footwear impressions in order to provide intelligence to operational staff.

Excellent communication skills are essential as well as the ability to manage a variety of tasks with minimum supervision. You will have all of the skills required to work well within a fast moving and regularly changing environment.

You will be expected to contribute to the quality standards in relation to the ISO 17025 accreditation and be supportive of continuous improvement initiatives and be flexible in your approach to change on a local and national level.

In return for your dedication and experience, we offer 24 days’ leave, excluding bank holidays, increasing to 29 days for 5 years+ service.  We support our people inside and out of work – offering a very competitive pension scheme, childcare vouchers, and discounts on shopping and eating out thanks to the Blue Light Card. And to take care of your physical and mental well-being, we’ve invested in extensive paid sick leave, trained mental health first aiders on-site, an employee advice service and access to gyms in some stations.

What will I be doing?

·       You will carry out a range of administrative and clerical duties, including the receipt and return of exhibits and evidence, in an efficient and timely manner.

·       Compare and examine custody footwear impressions and crime scene footwear impressions to provide intelligence to operational staff.

·       Compare crime scene impressions against footwear impressions to offer advice on the evidential value to prior to submission for forensic examination.

·       Attend relevant meetings, both internal and external, relating to footwear marks in order to ensure that the force benefits from and contributes to developments in the field.

·       Deal with email and telephone enquires in an appropriate, courteous and timely manner redirecting to other staff members where required.

What do I need?

·       Excellent communication and team working skills.

·       Computer skills are vital to this role so you must be IT literate and able to learn how to use new systems quickly.

·       Strong team working skills and the ability to support others when the need arises.

·       Excellent attention to detail – you’ll be coding printscans, crime scene impressions and comparing scene impressions to recovered footwear, so accuracy is crucial.

·       You’ll need to be methodical and organised whilst grasping complex procedures.

·       Full training will be provided but any previous experience of footwear screening or examination would be an advantage.
