Senior DBA - JRN 20095

The role:
Base Location as required within the Force area including Home Working

Basic salary is £48k inclusive of current temporary Northumbria Police discretionary market supplement. Market supplement is subject to review before April 2022 arising from ongoing Role, Review & Pay project.

ICT design, implement and manage a large number of critical databases as well as maintaining and supporting the databases affiliated with the many third party and in-house built applications within Force.

The Force is entering an exciting new era of technology and data led change which is heavily dependent on a number of key skillsets, including DBA skills.

To support the effective and efficient delivery of the Force’s data and information service the ICT department would like to recruit a capable, experienced and motivated Senior DBA to assist in the implementation, management, and support of numerous Oracle databases, including general support work.

Tasks will include database design, database management, second line support of applications, user administration, managing database backup/recovery procedures, planning and implementation of upgrades, and documenting procedures.

The databases that the DBA team support are critical to the Policing service and when they don’t perform as expected, this can be incredibly stressful for the end user.  This role is looking for someone who understands the impact of a database failure to the business and can not only guide the solution delivery but also support the user through the experience.

In return for your dedication and experience, we offer 23 days’ leave, excluding bank holidays, increasing to 28 days for 5 years+ service.  We support our people inside and out of work – offering a very competitive pension scheme, childcare vouchers, and discounts on shopping and eating out thanks to the Blue Light Card. And to take care of your physical and mental well-being, we’ve invested in trained mental health first aiders on-site, an employee advice service and access to gyms in some stations.  We also offer flexible working both from an agile approach to work location through to flexing how you want to work your contracted hours to accommodate both successful service delivery and a healthy, balanced home life.

What will I be doing?
You will be ensuring that the databases servicing all in-house built and procured third party applications are performant with any issues, problems or service errors addressed in a timely and consistent manner whilst supporting the end user through the process.

You will design and deliver performant database solutions that successfully meet the needs of the Force, considering resilience, back-up and recovery requirements in every instance.

You will perform regular patching of the existing suite of databases in the Force portfolio and perform requisite upgrading of those databases already in service to ensure they remain secure and supported.

You will also support the ICT delivery teams with your expertise in database management and administration.

What do I need?
  • Experience of administering Oracle Databases
  • Knowledge of high availability and disaster recovery options
  • Experience of backup and recovery procedures
  • Experience of installing, upgrading and patching
  • Experience of monitoring, tuning and securing databases
